This is a set of German soldiers during their version of basic training. Depending on the rank and branch of service basic training was conducted in recruitment battalions in the local recruitment districts of the soldier. At this location the new recruits were instructed in the basics of soldiering , such as drill and ceremony, customs and courtesies, rifle marksmanship, physical training etc. Towards the end of their training they received more specialized training pertaining to their branch and specific job. In the early days of the war divisions were responsible for establishing replacement battalions to train recruits. These were disbanded or combined later in the war to expedite training for losses through casualties. The five pictures all have the same dimensions of 2 11/16" wide and 1 7/8" high. They all have very good clarity and show great detail. Three of the images show a training company in formation, apparently undergoing inspection from the cadre. One image shows the company at open ranks and undergoing weapons inspection. One image is a close up of a member of the training unit cadre inspecting a recruits rifle and shows great uniform detail. One image shows the classic military "you've got 30 seconds to get inside and 20 of them are gone" mad dash to get inside the building. The recruits are clearly identified in the lighter colored uniforms, while the cadre are in the darker uniforms. The other two photos show the recruits doing personal hygiene. Of particular importance to the German military was physical training and personal hygiene. All five images have the same writing on the back. I believe it names the training company by number and possibly a town and year, but I can't read German. I believe all of the images came from a photo album. This will make a nice addition to your WWII German collection.
