This is an Imperial German Model 1915 Ersatz Prussian line Infantry pickelhaube used during World War I. The Model 1914-1915 Ersatz (substitute) was the last in the evolution of the spiked helmets worn by the German army. The pressed felt helmet is in excellent condition. There is absolutely no damage and virtually no short comings with this helmet! The interior of the helmet is in as good a condition as the exterior. The leather liner is of a thin, later style, and is intact. None of the fingers are missing, but one is torn at the draw string hole. A gray oxidized Prussian state eagle is mounted to the front of the helmet. It is currently held in place by the chin strap, the leather thongs are missing. This could be easily corrected, but I'll leave that to the new owner. The eagle clutches a scepter in one talon and a crown in the other. A banner spreads across the eagle that reads "MIT GOTT FUR KOENIG UND VATTERLAND", which translates to "With God for King and Country". The crown of the helmet has a gray steel vented enlisted mans spike mounted on an iron base plate. The spike is gray steel, removable, and does rotate freely. The chin strap lugs are gray steel. The black and white M91 Prussian enlisted cockade is on the left chin strap lug, the M97 Reich's cockade is on the right lug. The double buckle chin strap is present, but has been broken and repaired with tape at the right chinstrap brass loop. The rear spine of the helmet is gray steel and has the covered vent, to help improve cooling for the Infantry soldier on the march. It slides to make it adjustable, and was only used on Infantry helmets. The front visor has no trim and has no issues. The rear visor is securely attached to the helmet, with 100% of the stitching around the base of the helmet being intact. There are several stamps on the rear visor, but I can't make any of them out. I believe the stamps are the maker and possibly a unit mark. This is an absolutely beautiful example of one of the most iconic helmets from modern warfare. It could be the centerpiece of your WWI collection.
