This is an import Model 1840 Cavalry Saber, also referred to as a Dragoon Heavy Cavalry Saber, used during the Civil War. This import Model 1840 has no markings at all, making it impossible to determine where it was manufactured. The sword measures 40 1/2" overall, with a blade length of 35 1/4". The blade is slightly curved with a wide, flat back that measures 1 1/4" at the ricasso. It is a single edged blade with an integral fuller that measures 26" and a narrow fuller along the false edge measuring 19" in length. The blade edge is free of nicks and dings. The blade still has a bright appearance, with just a few scattered black age spots. Neither the reverse or obverse ricasso is marked. The blade has not been sharpened. The brass hilt still retains plenty of the original gilt. The original leather washer is missing in action. The wooden grip retains nearly all of the leather wrap, just a small section near the guard is missing. The double twisted brass wire is present and tight to the grip. The brass pommel cap is also tight to the grip. The peen appears to be unmolested. There is no deflection of the guard when handled. The original iron scabbard is not marked or stamped anywhere. It is free of dents. The scabbard has some of the bright finish showing, mixed with areas of dark patina. The drag is integral and shows minor wear, as do the mounts and suspension rings. There's no way to know if this sword was carried by a Confederate or Union cavalryman, but I'd like to think it was ol' Johnny Reb! Either way, it's a cool piece of history that will compliment any cavalry collection.
