This is a membership badge of the Union Veterans Legion. The Union Veterans Legion was incorporated on 5 February, 1885 in the Court of Common Pleas of Allegheny County, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The Legion was comprised of soldiers, sailors and Marines of the Union Army, Navy and Marine Corps of the Civil War. They had to have volunteered for a term of three years, and were honorably discharged for any cause after a minimum of two years of continuous service, or were discharged at any time due to wounds received in the line of duty. Individuals who were drafted or served with the Confederate Army were ineligible. This small membership badge was meant to be worn in a button hole of a jacket. It is in the shape of a military style shield. In the center on a smaller shield are the letters UVL with the years 1861 and 1865 above the lettering. Within a border created by the two shield outlines are 31 five point stars. The badge has a beautiful chocolate patina. These badges are less common than the GAR member badges, as the requirements for membership were a bit more strict to be in the Legion.
