This is a wooden storage box for sea sweeping signal lights used on board Japanese naval vessels during World War II. The box measures 14 3/8" long, 10 1/2" wide and 5 1/4" high. It has some tongue and groove construction, but is mostly put together with countersunk, flat head wood screws. There are two rope carrying handles, one on each side. The top of the box has two hinges, and is secured closed by a single hasp. A cloth restraining strap keeps the top from opening beyond 90 degrees. The outside top of the box has two lines of kanji. The larger letters translate to "box for equipment required". The smaller letters translate to "for sea sweeping signal lights type=1 reformed-1". The box remains in very good condition and will display well with any WWII Japanese naval collection.
