This is a US Army Air Force Pilot's wing from World War II. The wing measures 3" wide and is marked Sterling on the reverse. The wing has a nice aged, untouched patina. This set uses a pin back design to secure it to the uniform. The wings are WWII period, the letters AVG have been added post WWII. The American Volunteer Group, better known as the Flying Tigers, was formed to oppose the Japanese invasion of China. The group was formed in April, 1941 and disbanded on 4 July, 1942. It was made up of pilots and ground crew from the US Army Air Corps, US Navy and United States Marine Corps. The Flying Tigers flew the Curtis P-40 Warhawk that carried a painted scheme of a shark's nose that was distinctive to the group. In just over 15 months of combat, the American Volunteer Group was credited with destroying 296 Japanese aircraft, while losing only 14 of their pilots. I suspect this wing was made post war for a member of the AVG to be worn at functions and reunions of the American Volunteer Group. This set would look great displayed in any WWII aviation collection.
