This is an enlisted leather sword knot issued to Union Cavalrymen during the Civil War. The strap has an overall length of 34 1/2" and is 13/16" in width. These straps were intended to be attached to the guard to form a loop that went around the trooper's wrist. Then in the event his blade was struck with enough force to cause him to loose his grip the sword would not fall to the ground. One end of the strap is sewn to the leather knot, the other end is free. The free end is either wrapped around the knuckle bow or through a slot in the knuckle near the back of the knuckle bow, then reinserted back into the knot. The free end extends thought the knot enough so that one of the tassels can be inserted into the hole near the tip of the strap, locking it in place. The two leather loops allow the trooper to adjust the wrist loop and keep a tight fit. Doubled over the leather strap has a length of 15". The leather has considerable flaking and one small area of leather loss at the loop. The tassels are almost all full length on one side, and almost all broken to half length on the opposite side. One of the leather loops is missing. There is no makers mark visible. The leather is still very supple and could easily be installed on a saber. If you have a well used Model 1840 or 1860 enlisted Cavalry saber this knot will complete the look of having been there and done that!
