This is a brass shell case for a German 90mm field gun made into trench art. The case is 2" tall and 3 1/2" across the base. The brass has achieved a beautiful dark chocolate patina. The top of the shell case has been rolled out to form a lip. The sides of the shell case show some simple engraving. One side has World War engraved on it while the other side simply read 14 - 18, representing 1914 - 1918. Forming the handles of the cup are four German 9mm rounds, two complete and the other two just the projectiles. The head stamp on the case reveals it was made of 67% brass quality, HL for the Haniel Leuge brass factory in Dusseldorf, Germany and dated Juni, or July, 1917. If you collect trench art from WWI this might be the one piece you are missing!
