This is a US Model 1918 style winter uniform worn by the US Army during World War I. It features the four pocket design with epaulets. The five button coat has the subdued US eagle buttons, with six smaller buttons of the same type for the pockets and epaulets. The coat size buttons are back marked "STEELE & JOHNSON WATERBURY". The smaller buttons are all back marked "RLM & CO NEWARK NJ". The coat is fully lined and has no inner pockets. There are no stamped or hand written names anywhere inside the tunic. The left sleeve has an 82nd Division patch sewn on. Below the 82nd patch is a US Model 1917 machine gun on a tripod made of red material sewn on a small square piece of green material with black thread. A red discharge stripe is sewn on below the machine gun patch. Above the left sleeve trim are two gold chevrons of bullion, indicating one year of overseas service. The left collar disc is the crossed rifles of the Infantry, with the letters MG above the rifles and D below the rifles. The right disc is the standard US. There are no ribbons or medals on the tunic. the chevrons of a Sergeant are sewn on the right sleeve. There are multiple small holes in the tunic caused by insects. The majority of them are on the right sleeve near the Sergeant's chevrons. There is also a ragged hole along the hem on the left rear of the tunic. A 5/8" wide piece of red material is worn on the left epaulette, very similar to the combat leaders green identification stripe or tab from WWII. There is no makers label or quartermaster tag in the tunic. The trousers are from Henry Sonneborn & Company of Baltimore, Maryland. The Quarter Master Depot tag is sewn on the back side of the right front pocket, and shows the contract date of May 15, 1918. The trousers are in good condition. There are three small moth holes in the legs and a couple of small repairs. The laces for the bottom of the legs are present. This pair even comes with a WWI period web belt. This is a very nice and scarce example of a US Model 1918 uniform worn by a machine gun NCO of the 82nd "All American" Division. It displays well on a mannequin and will look great in any war room!
