This is a Pattern 1942 enlisted dress coat used during World War II. This service coat replaced the one introduced in 1940. Made of 18 ounce olive drab serge wool fabric, enlisted service coats were dyed a shade of OD #33. The coat was worn with trousers made of the same material, and dyed the same shade of OD #33. The belt loops for the garrison belt and the set of pleats known as "bi swing backs" were removed from the back of the coat. This particular service coat has a contractors label sewn into the right lower pocket. The coat is partially lined and has no inner pocket, only the four exterior pockets. Inside the lower right pocket the Quarter Master tag is ink stamped "ROSE BROTHERS/Cont. W-669-qm-20033/Dated July 10, 1942/Stock No. 55-C-69437/40R/Spec. No. 8-31D/Dated 2/7/40/Phila. Q. M. Depot with no inspectors line showing. The coat is very well made, coming out of the Philadelphia Quarter Master Depot. The epaulets have no distinctive unit insignia on them. The brass letters U.S. worn by officers is one each collar. The insignia of US Army Air Force pilots is worn on each lapel. There are no ribbons or other devices pinned above the left breast pocket. The left sleeve has the US Army Air Force Command patch securely sewn on at the shoulder. The chevrons of a Sergeant are sewn on below the command patch. There are no overseas stripes or service stripes sewn on the left sleeve. The right sleeve has a Twentieth Air Force patch sewn on at the shoulder and a set of Sergeant's chevrons sewn on below it. Sewn above the cuff of the right sleeve is an armament specialist patch. An honorable discharge "ruptured duck" is sewn above the right pocket. There is no moth damage on the coat, no other type damage or stains of any kind. All of the buttons on the coat are present, but the right lower pocket flap button is in the pocket. That problem, along with some tarnishing of all three other pocket buttons, are the only flaws on the coat. There are two laundry numbers visible on the lining of the coat, one ink stamped and one hand written. There may be a chance to identify this one for somebody who has the time. One thing is for sure, this Pattern 1942 dress coat displays well and will make a nice addition to any WWII US Air Force collection.
