This is a grouping identified to a Private First Class of Engineers from World War I. The items are identified to Private First Class Albert Joseph Tapper. Tapper was from Monticello, Minnesota and was inducted into the Army on 25 February, 1918 at the age of 25. Albert Tapper was a member of A Company, 45th Engineer Regiment from February, 1918 until 7 September, 1918, when he was transferred to 7th Company, Transportation Corps. He saw no combat, as his unit was a railway maintenance engineer unit. This engineer served overseas from 23 July, 1918 until 9 July, 1919. Tapper was honorably discharged from active duty at Camp Dodge, Iowa on 23 July, 1919. This grouping is made up of his Model 1918 tunic, trousers, overseas cap, his Model 1917 helmet, British made Small Box Respirator gas mask with carrier, a son in service flag with Engineer insignia, period photographs and both military and civilian paperwork. The 1918 tunic is made by the Consolidated Coat Contractors Company for the Philadelphia Quartermaster Depot. It features the four pocket design with epaulets. The five button coat has the rimmed US eagle buttons, with six smaller buttons of the same type for the pockets and epaulets. The left sleeve has a bullion on felt Railway Regulating patch, discharge stripe and two overseas strips sewn on it, indicating 12 months of overseas service. The right sleeve has no chevrons sewn on it. Instead the Engineer castle on a round wool background to indicate the rank of Engineer Private First Class is securely sewn on. The castle of the Engineer branch of service and a US disk adorn the collar. A Philadelphia Quarter Master Depot tag is sewn inside the lining on the bottom left of the lining with a 3719-P contract number. The tunic has no moth damage, and is ink marked A.J.T on the lining and TAPPER on the size label. The trousers are not marked, and are in very good condition with no moth damage. The overseas cap appears to be French made. It has no tags to identify it, but it too remains in excellent condition. It comes with an Engineer disk with the letter A over the castle. The 1917 American made helmet is complete with liner and chinstrap. The helmet heat stamp is no longer visible on the inside of the rim. The helmet has been painted in a camouflage pattern using brown, black, tan and green colors. Scratched into the paint on the underside of the rim is A.J. TAPPER. The British made mask and carrier are in reasonably good condition. The carrier is plain with the exception the last name TAPPER inked on the bottom of the carrier. The carrier contains a mask, filter with hose and an instruction card. All pieces are in good condition, but the lenses are missing from the mask. There are thirteen black and white photographs, including a four photo panoramic shot of a medical train, with several that have writing on the back. Among the paper work and other items are Tapper's Honorable Discharge, an Engineer son in service flag, draft registration card, Christmas card from the company officers, draft notification card, notice to appear card, post war pass dated 16 June, 1919, numerous VA documents and envelopes, and several documents from the Northern Pacific Railway Company. Apparently Albert Tapper remained a railroad man after the war. This is a nice collection of a railway engineer held by Albert J. Tapper, and will compliment any WWI collection.
