This book was written by Howard M. Conner, originally published in 1950, this edition was published in 2001. The narrative is 176 pages and is illustrated with photos and maps. This book is a second edition that was published by the Battery Press at Nashville, Tennessee. This is the definitive unit history of the 5th Marine Division in World War II. This book covers their formation and training, their invasion of Iwo Jima and their subsequent occupation of Japan. The Spearhead is filled with both color and black and white photos as well as many maps. The appendices include lists of all the division's men who were killed or wounded throughout the war. There is a section on awards, decorations and a full division roster by unit. This hard back book is in very good condition and does not have a dust cover. This is a must have reference for any Fifth Marine Division collector.
