This is a Confederate brass spur copied from the US Model 1859 spur design. The spur is in very good condition, having no twists or bends. When this one was made the neck was set slightly off center, being slightly canted to the wearer's inside. The squared off strap plates look huge, measuring 15/16" in height and 1 1/8" in length. The spur has an overall length of 5" and measures 2 15/16' across the opening. This one doesn't have a lot of casting flaws, but you can sure see the file work on it! The 1" rowel has 16 points and looks to be the original. At some point the spur was painted black, perhaps someone's attempt to preserve it. The stippled texture gives the casual observer the appearance of rust, making one think this is an iron spur. Closer inspection reveals it to be made of brass, with an iron rowel and retaining pin. This one was recovered many years ago in private property near Shiloh, Tennessee. This Confederate made spur is an excellent candidate for your dug spur or Confederate cavalry collection.
