This is a riker case with four Civil War bullets and a depiction of the death of Colonel Turner Ashby. There is an image of Brigadier General Turner Ashby, a brief biography of him, and a list of major battles he fought in during the war. Ashby served under "Stonewall" Jackson, first as a commander of Militia cavalry, then as the commander of the 7th Virginia Cavalry Regiment. His reconnaissance and screening owed a lot to Jackson's success in the 1862 Valley Campaign. Turner Ashby would eventually led the largest regiment in the Civil War, when the 7th Virginia would swell to the size of 29 companies. Ashby was in command of the rear guard during Jackson's withdrawal from Harrisonburg towards Port Republic, Virgina. On 6 June, 1862, during the Battle of Good's Farm, Colonel Turner Ashby was killed by a shot through the heart. Moments earlier his horse had been shot and Ashby was continuing the fight on foot. Ashby had been appointed a Brigadier General 10 days prior to his death, but it was never confirmed by the Confederate Senate. The four bullets, one a shot bullet recovered at Manassas, Virginia, one a .52 caliber Sharps bullet recovered in the Shenandoah Valley, Virginia, one a .69 caliber round ball recovered in Manassas, Virginia and the other a .577 caliber Enfield bullet recovered in the Shenandoah Valley, Virginia. The parchment style paper has been labeled "Brigadier General Turner Ashby ~ C.S.A.", along with the identification of each bullet, the dates of Ashby's birth and death and the battles he fought in. The case measures 12 1/4" wide and 8 1/4" high. It has been provisioned on the back to hang from two nails or screws. This will make an inexpensive birthday or Christmas present for the Civil War collector in the family.
