The Battle of Nashville was fought on 15 and 16 December, 1864. Despite suffering heavy losses at Franklin. Lieutenant General Hood marched the Army of Tennessee to attack the Union army of 55,000 men at Nashville commanded by Major General George Thomas. Thomas attacked Confederate positions on the 15th of December and overwhelmed the redoubts. That night Hood retreated 2 miles south with the Union army attacking the next afternoon. The Union broke the Confederate left, forcing the Confederates to retreat. Major General Forrest was responsible for the rear guard actions as Hood lead the remnants of the virtually destroyed Army of Tennessee away from Nashville. The case measures 12 1/4" wide and 8 1/4" high. It has been provisioned on the back to hang from two nails or screws.
