This is a US Model 1816 socket bayonet manufactured for the .69 caliber muskets used during the Civil War. This model of bayonet, known as the "Replacement" was in production from 1855 to about 1861. This bayonet has an overall length of 21", with a blade length of 18". The socket and blade still shows a bright finish, with small areas turning a steel gray. The flat part of the blade near the socket is crisply stamped with US. There are no other stamps on the bayonet. A stitched Pattern 1857 scabbard accompanies this bayonet. The leather is in good condition, with the normal amount of crazing for a piece of 155 year old leather. The scabbard tip and frog are securely attached. These "replacement" bayonets were intended to replace bayonets that were lost and required to meet specifications for the M1816 muskets that were converted from flint lock to percussion during the 1850's. The blade has a full length fuller, differing from the standard M1816 bayonet that has a 9" fuller. The M1816 "Replacement" bayonets most definitely saw service during the Civil War. This is a good example of a Model 1816 bayonet and pre war scabbard that was used on the .69 caliber muskets used during the Civil War.
