This is an 1800's Cavalry lance of unknown origin, discovered in Savannah, Georgia. It has some characteristics of the British Pattern 1820 lance, but differs in exact dimensions. The most noticeable characteristic is the flattened ball at the base of the blade. This was introduced by the British with their P1820 lance, and was intended to prevent over penetration of the target. The use of the ball was discontinued with the arrival of the P1840 British lance. This lance has an overall length of 8' 6". The cruciform blade has a length of 7 3/4", with an overall head length of 9 3/4". The ball is of a two piece design and is retained by a flat head screw. The visible part of the langets measure 21" in length and are retained by four iron pins. There are three pennon, or pennant, attachments. They are not part of the langet, are round and are screwed directly into the haft. I am no expert in wood and will come back and update this listing when I determine what kind of wood the haft is. There are a series of broken nails at the balance point of the lance. Approximately 2/3 of the way down the shaft a modern repair has been made using glue and small round head nails. The affected area is approximately 16" long. A cone shaped shoe 6" long with short langets is at the ground end of the lance. While this lance is similar in many respects to the British P1820 cavalry lance, it is not British made. The only stamp on the entire piece is either the number 7 or the letter L found at the base of the blade just above the ball. Despite the repair, this lance is in overall strong condition and would look great with a pennant displayed with it!
