Set #1 From the Franklin Collection 1960

This is set number one, comprised of four civil war prints, from the Franklin collection. These prints were reproduced on the centennial of the Civil War. At the beginning of the Civil War, publishers of newspaper and periodicals engaged the best illustrators of the day to draw on the spot sketches of scenes of troop movements and actual battles. The illustrations were then transferred to wood and engraved by master craftsmen known as wood engravers. These were then used to print in the weekly newspapers and magazines of the day to give the readers at home a true and realistic picture of the war. In a basement vault in an old printing firm established in 1844, a great many wood engravings were found. These reproduced prints were made from the images on those blocks. The sets were sold with four prints inside a very attractive portfolio. Set one contains the prints "Mosby's Raiders Waiting In Ambush To Capture Union Courier". "Hancock's Brigade Along the Pamunkey River", "Burning of Union Fleet, Gosport Navy Yard, April 21, 1861" and "Abraham Lincoln At The Astor House, New York City". The prints measure 19" wide and 13" tall, and have a large border making them perfect for single or double mat framing. Each print has the disclaimer in the bottom left corner, "From an authentic Civil War wood engraving", and "Copyright 1960 Franklin Printing Co. This set is in very good condition. The actual prints are in excellent condition, the portfolio they come in has some wear and tear. These would look framed, or displayed together with the portfolio.
