This is a Model 1851 Colt Navy cap and ball revolver. The serial number 176949 puts this one in the production year of 1864. The 7 1/2" barrel has very strong rifling and a bright clean bore. The single line ADDRESS COL. SAMl COLT NEW YORK U.S. AMERICA address is clearly visible. The Colt patent mark is still very crisp and legible, as is the cylinder scene! You can still read the "ENGAGED 16 MAY 1843" along the front edge of the cylinder, not bad for 157 year old gun! The sub inspectors stamp of M is found on the back strap, along with the letter B in the trigger guard. The serial numbers are very crisp and match, with the exception of the loading lever. It is unmarked but appears to be a period replacement. The gun has an overall light plum patina. The mechanics of this old Colt work perfectly. There are no traces of the original silver wash visible on the trigger guard and back strap. The exposed brass has taken on a medium golden patina that is very eye pleasing. 36 CAL is stamped into the left rear of the trigger guard. The walnut grips have the majority of the original varnish remaining, with a couple of small bumps and dings on the sides of the grips. They fit the gun like a glove, are not cartouched and have no repairs. This is a beautiful gun that could have fought with some Confederate soldier during the war of northern aggression. Regardless of which side it resided with, this one will make a great addition to your Civil War weapons collection, or your Colt revolver collection.
