This is an illustrated page from the article printed by Harper's Weekly covering Major General Winfield Scott Hancock. Hancock was a career military man, serving in the United States Army from 1844 to 1886. He was in the Mexican American War, the American Civil War and served on the frontier during the Indian wars. Hancock was one of the Union's most successful Generals, and one of a very few who were successful from the beginning of the war until the end. He is best noted for his leadership during the Battle of Gettysburg. This illustration shows Hancock in civilian attire. Even though he spent his life in the Army, Hancock did have one failed attempt at politics. In 1880 he was the Democratic nominee for President of the United States, when he lost to James Garfield. The illustration measures 8 3/4" wide and 13" tall. The one page section of the article is mounted on a piece of cardboard and is protected by shrink wrap. This one page from the Harper's Weekly looks just the way it did when it was printed years ago. There are no smudges, stains, rips, tears, creases or folds on the page. The black and white illustration shows a bust of Hancock facing to the right in a civilian coat and tie. If you collect Civil War or Indian War documents this piece will fit right in!
