This is a Cavalry cap or hat insignia from the Indian Wars period. It measures 2 1/8" wide and 1" tall. It is made of brass and still has a little shine to it. It is made up of Model 1872 sabers that are crossed with the letter A in the lower quadrant. General Order Number 21, dated 20 March, 1876, directed that the letter of the company will be placed in the lower angle and the number of the regiment in the upper angle. This set only has the company letter A, and there is no evidence that a regimental number was ever put on this insignia. The pin is still present and closes properly. It is possible that this insignia was made by a jeweler and privately purchased. This would look great displayed with a Model 1872 kepi!
