This is an M2 Jungle First Aid pouch from World War II. After the battle for Guadalcanal ended in November, 1942, the US Army medical department was tasked with developing a first aid kit for use by troops in jungle areas. Their first attempt was known as the M1 Jungle First Aid Kit. It was soon replaced by the M2 kit, because of the size and awkwardness of the M1 kit. The M2 was a scaled down version, adopted 17 August, 1943 and was fitted with a M1910 hook so it could be attached to a pistol or cartridge belt. It also had M1910 grommets at the bottom, so a M1923/42 first aid pouch could be attached to it. The entire kit consisted of an olive drab #7 cotton duck pouch with M1910 hook and grommets. The interior was divided into five separate compartments. The three large ones could accommodate a Carlisle bandage or similar sized items. The two smaller compartments housed water purification tablets and similar items. The interior was covered by two cloth side flaps, in addition to the outer flap that also had an additional pocket. The outer flap was secured to the pouch by two snaps instead of LTD fasteners. In late 1944 the dimension were enlarged slightly. By then, they were common among both the Army and Marines fighting in the Pacific. The Marine Corps continued to use the M2 Jungle kit through Korea and into early Vietnam. This pouch does not come with any of the contents of the kit. It is still clearly marked US on the outer flap, and stamped J A SHOE/1944 on the inner flap. Both of the snaps securing the outer flap are present and functional. There is one teat in the pouch, approximately 1" long between the two snaps towards the bottom of the pouch. This would look great hanging from a Pacific theater Marine or Army web belt!
