US Model 1896 .30-40 Krag Carbine
Item #: WR567
This is a US Model 1896 Krag carbine in .30-40 caliber manufactured by the Springfield Armory in 1897. This carbine measures 42 1/2" overall, with a 22" barrel and is in it's original configuration. The round barrel retains some of the original bluing and has a smooth, non pitted surface. The bore is bright and shows good rifling. The original blade type front sight remains securely pinned to the sight post. The rear sight is the correct carbine sight, stamped with the letter C and graduated out to 2000 yards. The single barrel band is also the correct thick, high hump band. The receiver retains some original bluing, and is stamped "U.S./MODEL 1896/SPRINGFIELD ARMORY/85843". The extractor group on top of the bolt retains almost all of the original finish. The underside of the bolt handle has the long flat surface, a feature of the 1897 bolt group. The magazine loading gate retains most of the case color, but the magazine side plate has a silver gray patina. The sling bar, saddle ring and trigger guard have a matching patina of the magazine side plate, with the trigger guard still retaining some bluing. The butt plate has a silver, "in the white" patina, no bluing at all remains. The stock is in very good, yet well handled condition. The forehand is just slightly lighter in color than the stock, which has a nice medium brown look. The normal bumps and dings can be found on the stock, but there are no cracks or wood loss anywhere. The rectangle cartouche on the left side of the wrist is legible, but worn. It contains the initials JSA and the year 1897 stamped within. The proof mark, a circled P, is also well worn but visible behind the trigger guard. This carbine has survived well over the past 124 years, and is still in it's original configuration. This one is well worth considering if you have a Spanish American or Philippine American War collection.
