This is a Model 1910 canteen set from World War II. The set consists of a 1943 dated cover manufactured by the St. Croix Glove Company of Minnesota, an undated cup manufactured by Ingersoll Products and an experimental Ethocelulose canteen dated 1943 and manufactured by AMUS. These canteen were made in an effort to conserve precious metals for other areas of the war effort. Several manufacturers were used to produce these plastic canteens using Dow Chemicals Ethocelulose plastic between 1942 and 1943. These canteens were used mainly in the Pacific theater, mostly to the Marine Corps. They proved to be very unpopular with the troops, one because of the taste they imparted to the water, but mainly because of the heat related stress cracks that caused them to leak. This example is free of any cracks, but does have the typical white residue on the inside. In an effort to combat the foul tasting water soldiers and Marines alike used baking soda when filling the canteens, causing that white residue to accumulate on the insides and outside of the canteens. The canteen still has the cap and chain, but no cork gasket. It is embossed on the bottom with US/1943 and the makers stamp AMUS within two small circles. The cup is dent free. The canteen cover is strong, with no holes or rips and the stitching is strong and tight. The U.S. stamp is strong, and the makers stamp is very legible on the cover, as well as the stamps in the canteen and cup. This is a very rare canteen set issued in the Pacific Theater in very good condition.
