This is a buff white vest from the Civil War period. This one is a civilian made or private purchase one, as the regulation vests were predominately blue for the Union and mixed shades of gray for the Confederates. This less common vest is made of a light buff wool front with a white cotton muslin lining and a white cotton muslin back. The front has eleven flat, brass coin buttons sewn on. The buttons have no back mark and are nominally 13 mm. The button holes are corded. Where most vests encountered have three pockets this one has four, two breast pockets and two lower pockets. The pockets are made of the same white cotton muslin as the back. The back has two adjustment straps, joined by a small two prong iron frame buckle. The collar of this vest is of the stand up variety, common for that period. The vest is entirely machine sewn, with all the stitching being strong and unbroken. There are several areas where the vest is stained, mainly in the arm pits and the collar. Overall this vest is in very good condition, and came into the shop from the local southwest Virginia area. I can't say with certainty, but I suspect this belong to a Virginian that wore it from home when he left to join the Confederate Army.
