This is a personal stationery and writing set for an American soldier used during World War I. It measures 8 3/4" wide and 9 1/2" high. It is made of a hard cover front and back this is sewn inside a khaki cover. The stationery set is kept closed by two small snaps. When open the writing set shows three large pockets sewn into the khaki cover and two smaller ones. A single sheet of paper with the heading WAR WORK COUNCIL/ARMY AND NAVY/YOUNG MEN'S CHRISTIAN ASSOCIATION is still with the set and is dated 1917. It is stored in the largest pocket of the case, the other two look to be large enough to hold envelopes. The two smaller pockets were most likely used to store pencils, erasers and other smaller writing implements. The name W.E. MANN is written in ink on the front cover. I have done no research on the name. Items such as these were supplied to the soldiers overseas to encourage communication between the soldier and his family. This looks to have never been used and would make an excellent addition to your WWI personal effects collection or display.
