This is a black and white "Yard Long" photograph of the USS Amberjack in Havana Harbor, Cuba in 1962. The image measures 19 3/4" wide and 10" high. It shows the SS 522, Amberjack, entering Havana Harbor unassisted. There are around 25 personnel on deck, some in dress whites, the majority in work dungarees. Off to the left is the lighthouse and Castle Morro at the entrance to the harbor. In the foreground 1940's and 1950's automobiles line the streets as a small crowd gathers along the harbor wall. The bottom left corner of the image is marked in white U.S.S. "Amberjack"/Havana Cuba. There is a photographers stamp on the reverse of the photo that dates the image to 1962. The Cuban missile crisis between Russia and the United States occurred in October, 1962. I'm not sure if this is before or after that time period. The SS522 was the second submarine to be named the Amberjack, She was launched on 15 December, 1944 and commissioned on 4 March, 1946 with Commander William B. Parham as the commanding officer. This submarine was part of SubRon 4 based at Key West, Florida. For eleven years the Amberjack conducted operations along the eastern US coast, until her home port was changed to Charleston, South Carolina in August, 1959. This was to her the sub's new home port until July, 1970 when she once again reported to the naval base at Key West, Florida. The USS Amberjack was decommissioned on 17 October, 1973 and was sold to the Brazilian Navy. This is a cool piece of Cold War history that would look great framed and hanging on your wall.
