Early 1800's Standard Colour Button

This is an excavated early 1800's button recovered from Liberty Pike in Franklin, Tennessee. The plain faced, flat button measures 1" across the face. A small amount of the original green paint remains on the face. The back of the button has green around the perimeter of the button, with gold gilt in the center of the button. The back mark of STANDARD COLOUR is very legible. A swan or some type of water fowl is depicted above the lettering. The shank is still present, but is slightly leaning and towards the bottom of the button. The button dates between 1800 and 1830. Franklin, Tn. was founded in October of 1799. It was named after Benjamin Franklin, a close friend of Dr. Hugh Williamson. The county was named after Dr. Williamson. Prior to the Civil War, Williamson county was one of the wealthiest in Tennessee. This button is from the pre Civil War era, and is most likely made in England.
