This is half of a US Model 1912 Cavalry Ration Pack set that was intended to be used with the experimental Model 1912 saddle. The pack consisted of a left and right bag made of heavy duck canvas that was intended to carry rations for the trooper. The bags had a dual purpose role, serving as individual ration bags attached to the saddle when mounted and laced together to form a knapsack when dismounted. The bags were meant to carry one haversack ration nd one emergency ration when on campaign. Many of the cavalry units that were involved with the Mexican Expedition were equipped with the M1912 Cavalry trials equipment, most of them disapproved of the ration bags. The Medical Corps were very interested in these experimental bags, and in 1913 was approved for use by the Medical Corps board in 1916. The ration pack became a common use item for the Medical Corps soldiers and remained in use through World War I. This single bag is in pretty good condition, but does have a couple of holes in it from use. The snap link and adjustment buckle from the strap are missing as well. All ink stamps are crisp and legible, this one being stamped LONG 10-18 on the inside of the flap. This one could fill a hole in your Mexican Border Expedition or your WWI Medical Corps collection.
