This is the Honorable Discharge and war time insurance bond from the US Treasury for Private Harry Andrew Latto. Private Latto was a member of the Student Army Training Corps at Bethany College in West Virginia. The Student Army Training Corps was a nationwide program initiated by the War Department's Committee on Education and Special Training. The program began in April of 1918 and was terminated on 18 December, 1918. There were 157 training detachments at college campuses across the United States. The purpose of the program was to train draftees in a variety of trades needed for the war effort. Members of the program was inducted into the Regular Army as Privates and were subject to military discipline. They lived in barracks, ate in mess halls and were paid $30 a month in addition to having their tuition paid. Students received 42 hours of essential and allied subjects and were required to perform military drill for 11 hours per week. This Honorable Discharge shows that Private Latto was in fact a member of that program. He was born in Uhrichsville, Ohio and was 19 years old and a student when he enlisted in the Army. It is stated he had blue eyes, light hair, of fair complexion and stood five feet nine inches in height. His discharge is dated 21 December, 1918 and signed by Harold E. Stark/2nd Lieut. INF US Army. The reverse of the form has his enlistment information. He was enlisted on October 10, 1918 in Wellsburg, West Virginia. This document has several ink stamps on the front and back from different issuing and recording offices. It remains in exceptional condition for the age. The only flaw are the creases from being folded for years. The insurance bond from the Treasury Department is also in very good condition. The certificate number, date and name are very legible in typed black ink. The dollar amount of coverage and the amount of monthly installations is printed in blue ink. In the event of death or permanent disability Harry A Latto or his beneficiary would receive $10,000.00 paid in monthly installments of $57.50. The two WWI period documents identified to the same person would like nice framed in your war room.
