.577 Enfield Bullet in Wood Recovered in Bamberg County, South Carolina

This is an excavated .577 Enfield bullet trapped in a section of wood from the Civil War period. This bullet was recovered on private property in Bamberg County, South Carolina near the Battle of River's Bridge. The Battle of River's Bridge was fought 3 February, 1865, along the Salkehatchie River. Approximately 5,000 Union soldiers under the command of Major General Francis Blair Jr, met 1,200 Confederates under the command of Major General Lafayette McLaws at the crossing along the Salkehatchie River near present day Ehrhardt. This battle was a Union victory, as the Union flanking maneuver of two Union brigades led by MG Blair forced the Confederates to withdraw towards Branchville. Union casualties were listed 18 killed and 106 wounded, while the Confederates suffered 8 killed, 44 wounded and 45 captured or missing. This little jewel will make a great starter piece for the new collector in the family.
