Non Excavated .50 Caliber Maynard Carbine Cartridge

This is a non excavated .50 caliber flat nose Maynard carbine cartridge used during the Civil War. This brass cased cartridge has no head stamp. The case length is 1.20" with a projectile diameter of .450", with an overall length of 1.595". The projectile, a flat nose, has an aged, light gray patina to it. The brass case has a beautiful muted golden patina. These rounds were made for the Maynard carbine, which used the percussion cap system of ignition. This required a small hole in the base of the case to let the flame from the cap ignite the powder charge in the cartridge. The wide base soldered onto the case helped seal the breech when the cartridge was fired, and aided in removal of the cartridge after firing. If you have an ammunition collection, this one needs to be in it!
