This is a US Model 1917 helmet from World War I. The helmet has a stainless steel band with the seam in the front. The heat stamp of ZC 474 is visible on the underside of the rim near the seam in the band. The chin strap is present and complete. The liner is still present and shows evidence of wear. The original paint remains on the inside of the helmet. The exterior of the helmet has been repainted in a camouflage pattern using the original paint and a darker shade of green. In the center of the helmet on the front is a military style shield with a black outline. The top and bottom sections of the shield are painted red. Below the top section in black lettering is the word SOMME, and below that is a red number 1. In black lettering above the shield is A.E.F., with 26th to the left of the shield and Inf to the right of it. This is representative of the 26th Infantry Regiment of the 1st Infantry Division. The 26th Regiment was formed in 1901 and is one of the oldest continually serving Infantry Regiments in the US Army. The 26th Regiment saw action in the Philippine Insurrection during the Spanish American Wars, service on the Mexican border fighting bandits and in the western Indian territories of the United States. It was selected in June, 1917 as one of four regular Army infantry regiments to form the 1st Expeditionary Division being sent to France after America's entrance into WWI. The 16th, 18th, 26th and 28th regiments would formed the redesignated 1st Infantry Division, the famous Big Red One. The "Blue Spaders", a nickname given the 26th Regiment by German soldiers, would earn seven campaign streamers and two foreign awards during WWI, but the awards came at a heavy cost. At Soissons alone the regiment suffered over 1500 killed and wounded in the five days of fighting. This unidentified helmet of the 26th "Blue Spader" Regiment has some great eye appeal, and will compliment any WWI helmet or "Big Red One" collection.
