This is a German 1st Model Luftwaffe dagger from World War II. The dagger was made by Emil Voos of Solingen, Germany. The German Airforce (Luftwaffe) first started carrying daggers in 1935. It was worn during functions or events that did not warrant wearing a formal sword. This example of the 1938 Luftwaffe dagger is in very good condition. The blade is in amazing condition, with the acid etched Voos mark of the snake on a tree stump within an oval and "EMIL VOOS" in an arc at the top and SOLINGEN in an arc at the bottom of the oval. The original polish runs the full length of the blade, providing a mirror like finish. The tip and edges of the blade are perfectly intact and crisp. The only blemish on the blade is at the tip on the same side as the makers mark. It still retains the small leather washer, also completely intact. The aluminum pommel and cross guard have the sunwheel swastikas. The blue Moroccan leather covered grip is complete, but shows wear from frequent use. The down swept wings of the cross guard also so some wear from use. The scabbard is in very good condition. The blue Moroccan leather cover is gone and the scabbard body has been painted that color of blue. It is dent free and contrasts well with the nickel plated mounts and tip. The chain link hanger and clip are in good condition, the chain having nine links on the top side and fourteen links on the bottom. The dagger comes with a silver portepee that I believe is original to the dagger. It has some significant frying, but will accompany the dagger to it's new owner. Overall, this is a very nice example of the German 1st Model Luftwaffe dagger that will compliment any collection.
