This is an original Kaiserliche Marine Matrosenmutze (Imperial German Navy flat cap) from World War I. This very rare cap represents the distinctive headgear worn by enlisted sailors of the Imperial German Navy during the summer or in hot weather environments. The white cotton body remains in amazing condition, retaining it's original shape. There is no damage anywhere on the cap, just a couple of small spots of discoloration. The silk tally prominently displays the KAISERLICHE MARINE in gold flat wire lettering. The front of the cap retains the red, white and black cockade of the German Empire. The interior of the cap is in very good condition as well. The cloth sweatband shows very slight wear from use. There is an issue ink stamp in the back of the sweatband that reads B. A. W./5. 1. 10/58, all withing a black rectangular border. The B.A.W. stands for "Bekleidung Amt Wilhelmshaven", meaning the cap was issued at the port of Wilhelmshaven on 5 January, 1910. 58 represents the size of the cap, which is a 7 1/4 in US cap sizes. The sailor that wore this cap had a last name of Kramer, which is ink stamped on a small piece of cloth and sewn onto the sweatband beside the issue stamp. Hand written in ink on the opposite side of the issue stamp is II 17 3/306, I believe this indicates where this sailor was assigned to on board the ship. This extremely rare Imperial German Navy cap remains in amazing condition, and will add some historical significance to any WWI collection.
