This is an oval photograph of General John "Black Jack" Pershing in an oval bubble glass frame. The photograph was taken between 1907 and 1916. The image is 19 1/4" high by 13 1/4" wide. General Pershing is dressed in his full dress jacket. His epaulettes have the knots stars of an American General. There are three medals pinned on his left chest, the Indian Campaign Medal, Spanish Campaign Medal and the Philippine Campaign Medal. Pershing was a career military officer, serving from 1886 - 1924. He saw action and commanded troops in the Indian Wars, Spanish American War, Philippine American War, Russo-Japanese War, Mexican Revolution, and was the Commander of the American Expeditionary Force during World War I. In 1919 Congress create the rank of General of the Armies of the United States, just for Pershing. John J Pershing died on 15 July, 1948 and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery near the men he commanded during WWI. This patriotic image of Pershing, with the American Eagle above him, flanked on each side by thirty nine star flags, a soldier under the left side flag and a sailor under the right side flag is copy righted 1917. This image was printed to unite the American people as the United States entered World War I. The image is in very good condition, has some issues. There are several areas where the plaster has chipped free of the wooden frame, mostly along the bottom edge. If you have a WWI collection, you just gotta have the commander of all the American forces who fought in France!
