This is a United Stated Marine Corps Vandergrift jacket identified to Sergeant Samuel Elisha Jr. This uniform jacket came about when the 1st Marine Division started arriving in Melbourne, Australia in January, 1943. The division spent nine months there after their Guadalcanal campaign. The division arrived with only summer tan uniforms and their utilities. The cooler climate of Australia saw the marines being issued Australian battle dress jackets, very similar to the British battle jackets. The jackets became very popular with the marines, and they began to call them "Vandergrift" jackets in honor of their division commander, Major General Alexander Vandergrift. The jacket has the patch of the 1st Marine Division sewn on the left sleeve. On each sleeve are the chevrons of a Sergeant and one service stripe to indicate at least four years of service. A set of Pattern 1937 Eagle, Globe and Anchor insignia are on the collar, neither are back marked. Pinned above the left breast pocket are two ribbon bars, the upper one has a Purple Heart ribbon and the Navy Marine Corps Presidential Unit Citation ribbon with two bronze stars on it. The second bar has the Asiatic Pacific Campaign ribbon with four bronze stars, the American Campaign ribbon and the World War II Victory Medal ribbon. A French Fourragere is worn around the left shoulder. There is no makers label or stamps anywhere inside the jacket. All the buttons on the uniform are plain plastic buttons, with the exception of the two epaulette buttons which are Marine Corps buttons. The garrison cap is in good condition. It is slightly discolored along the very top of the cap. It has no tags or marking inside of it. Included with the jacket is some paperwork on Sergeant Peters, to include his Honorable Discharge, digital copy of his service record, newspaper article of his wounding on Peleliu, Marine Corps ID Card, black and white photograph of Sgt Peters on crutches along with other paperwork, an unnamed Purple Heart with purple presentation box and his tan tie with his name stenciled in black. Sergeant Samuel Peters served as a rifleman in F Company, 2nd Battalion, 5th Regiment, 1st Marine Division and participated in combat actions on Cape Gloucestar, Peleliu and Okinawa. He enlisted in the Marine Corps on 2 January, 1943, was Honorably discharged on 2 November, 1945 and reenlisted for an additional three years on 2 January, 1948. This is a very good condition Vandergrift jacket, overseas cap and tie of a Marine Non Commissioned Officer that still has some research to be done on it. It will make a fantastic addition to any WWII collection.
