This is a US Model 1895 officer's undress coat worn by the US Navy during World War I. The coat has been identified to Lieutenant M. M. Fenner. This coat came in two versions, the Fall/Winter/Spring version that was made of dark blue wool with a polished cotton lining, and a Summer Tropics version made of white cotton duct material with a white cotton lining. This is obviously the dark blue wool version. The blouse is trimmed in 1 1/4" mohair braid on the collar, the edge of the blouse, seams on the back up to the shoulder and the split side seam. Seven black gutta percha buttons are sewn onto a hidden fly, one is missing. These buttons, along with a double hook and loop in the collar and a single hook and loop at the bottom keep the front of the coat closed. The coat is lined in polished green cotton fabric and has two inner pockets. The sleeves are lined with a striped cotton tick material. The double silver bars of a Lieutenant are sewn onto each side of the collar, being made of false bullion material. Sewn behind each set of bars is a silver fouled anchor, showing Lt. Fenner was a "line officer". The left sleeve cuff has two 1/2" gold stripes sewn 1/4" apart to indicate the rank of Lieutenant. Sewn above the stripes is a five point star also made of bullion, again to show this Lieutenant is a "line officer". Sewn above the star are two gold bullion chevrons to indicate twelve months of service in a combat zone. The right sleeve cuff is identical minus the two gold chevrons. There are two inner pockets, one vertical on the left side and one horizontal on the right side. The makers label of The Army & Navy Cooperative Company is sewn on right side pocket There is also a tag inside the pocket that has the name M M Fenner written in cursive ink, along with other information. The coat is in very good condition, having no damage at all on the exterior of the coat. The lining shows fraying, picks and tears, especially in the arm pit areas. This is a very good example of a pre WWI uniform coat worn by a US Navy veteran of WWI.
