This is a Model 1872 McClellan saddle used by the US cavalry during the American Indian War period. This saddle is in original condition and shows no repairs at all. The open seat saddle tree is in good condition, having no damage at all. The black leather covering the seat is in very good condition. There are a couple of small spots on the front of the bars where the stitching is broken. The remainder of the stitching remains tight and unbroken. The stitching on the cantle remains tight and unbroken with no leather missing. The leather on the pommel is also complete and has tight, unbroken stitching. The three brass escutcheon plates on the cantle and one on the pommel are securely attached to the mortises. The saddle shield is missing unfortunately. The large fenders are made of heavy black harness leather. The pommel and cantle quarter straps, with the iron rings, are securely attached to the saddle. They show some light crazing on the high points of the straps. There is tear in the right fender where the stirrup strap comes through. Heavy, black harness leather straps with large jappaned roller buckles attach a bent oak wooden stirrup to each side of the saddle. The stirrups, each having a 3" tread, have heavy black leather foul weather guards covering them. The foul weather guards are not embossed with the US. The leather girth strap is in good condition. It shows honest wear, but is not torn, ripped or show signs or repair anywhere. The stitching remains as tight as the day it was sewn! The hardware on the saddle is a mix of iron and brass pieces. The foot loops on the pommel side of the bars are brass, and have brass rings attached to them. There are no staples on the pommel side of the bars. There are no foot loops on the cantle side of the bars. There are two iron stirrups on the cantle side of the bars, one with a brass ring and the other an iron ring. I believe this saddle has seen some light repairs or modifications from a unit saddler. There is no makers tag or stamps any where on the saddle. If you have an Indian Wars cavalry collection this one will make a nice addition. It looks as though some trooper just pulled it off his horse!
