Identified WWII USMC Model 1937 Service Alpha Coat PFC John A Dunlap

This is a United Stated Marine Corps Winter Service Alpha jacket identified to Private First Class John Akin Dunlap Jr. This forest green kersey wool winter alpha jacket is in excellent condition. The only problem is one small hole on the lower left pocket near the bottom of the pocket. The jacket has the patch of the 1st Marine Division sewn on the left sleeve. The 1st Marine Division was originally activated on 1 February, 1941 on board the USS Texas. The 1st Marine Division took part in the campaigns of Guadalcanal, New Britain, Mariana and Palau Islands and the Battle of Okinawa. The jacket and overseas cap as well as the Eagle, Globe and Anchor insignia are the Pattern 1937, correct for WWII. A 1st Marine Division patch is sewn on the left sleeve. Below the division patch is the chevron of a Private First Class. The right sleeve has a Private First Class chevron sewn on it. Pinned above the left breast pocket are the ribbons for the Purple Heart medal, Navy & Marine Corps Presidential Unit Citation with two campaign stars, American Campaign medal, the Asiatic Pacific Service Ribbon with four campaign stars and the World War II Victory medal. Sewn above the right breast pocket is an honorable discharge patch, known as a "ruptured duck". The left sleeve lining is ink stamped with 5 S/COLLEGE HALL FASHIONS/CONTRACT NUM -41118/DATED JUKY 16, 1943. The right sleeve lining is ink stamped J-A DUNLAP in a single line and hand written J.A. DUNLAP Jr. above the ink stamp. All the buttons on the uniform are present and securely attached. The green wool overseas cap with P1937 EGA that is unmarked. Included with the coat and cap is a WWII Purple Heart still int the original WWII presentation box. The medal is not engraved with Dunlap's name, but was with the uniform. PFC Dunlap was assigned to H&S Battery, 4th Battalion, 11th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division. He enlisted in the Marine Corps on 1 Oct, 1942 and trained in MOS 776 as a radioman. He was wounded on Okinawa on 20 April, 1945, receiving a gunshot wound to the left hand. A three ring binder of research information is included with the coat. This identified coat and cap are in exceptional condition and will enhance any WWII Marine collection.
