This is a Frazier's patent US cartridge box used by the US Army during the Indian Wars period. This cartridge box is a very good example of a Frazier's patent cartridge box. The closure tab for this cartridge box comes over the top of the box, is reinforced at the closure hole with a brass grommet and closes on a brass finial. This cartridge box was worn on the waist belt and has no sling. The front shows very little crazing, mainly around the rivets for the brass hinges. All stitching is still very strong and tight. The box was manufactured by McKenney & Company of New York. The inside front side of the cartridge box has two very strong and clear stamps. The one on the left is stamped FRAZIER"S PATENT in a downward arc, with PATENT APRIL 23rd 1878 in an upward arc at the bottom and REISSUED MCH 5th 1878 and FEB 5th 1872 above that date. The stamp on the right reads McKenney in a downward arc, & Co in the center and NEW YORK in an upward arc. The wooden 20 round cartridge block is still present and in good condition. The brass oval plate on the out side of the flap has the letters NY in the center. Both belt loops are still present and are securely attached to the box. The brass has taken on a nice medium chocolate golden patina. This is a pretty nice example of a state issued cartridge box used during the Indian Wars period.
