This is a debt judgement from the Commonwealth of Kentucky, Logan County, against Thomas R. Wallace. This small document is in pretty rough shape, yet you can still read everything printed and handwritten on the form. The paper measures 7 3/4" wide and 6" high. In addition to the original ruling, there are hand written entries on the back of the form concerning the debt of Wallace. On the front of the document below the COMMONWEALTH OF KENTUCKY the form reads as follows: To the Sheriff of Logan County-GREETINGS We command you, that of the estate of Thomas R. Wallace, late of your baliwick, you cause to be made the sum of five hundred and eighty dollars and no cents, with interest thereon, at the rate of six per centum per annum, from the 11th day of June, 1842 until paid Peter Shields, late of our Logan Circuit Court recovered against him for debt on a decree. Also the sum of 6 dollars and 25 cents which to the said Shields, in the same Court were adjudged for his cost in that behalf expended here of the said Wallace is convicted as appears to us of record and that you have the said sum of money before the Judge of the said Court at the Court House on the 22nd day of July next, to render to the said Shields of the debt interest and cost aforesaid, nad have then this writ. Witness Marmaduke B. Morton, Clerk of the said Court at the Court House in Russellville the 18th day of may 1848 and in the 56th year of the Commomwealth. M.B. Morton
On the reverse of the form there are two different statements written. One is written by hand written by Mr. Shield and discusses a credit of $87.20 that was paid by a P. L. Rittenbaum. The other statement discusses the sale of four males, Allen, George, Oscar and Alford. They were sold to the highest bidder on the 26th of June, 1848 for a total of $2356. This is an early document, and deals with some controversial subjects, but they are a part of our history. This one could still be housed in an acrylic two sided case so that both sides could be read.
