This Model 1904 haversack is in very good condition, showing some use. The front flap is clearly stenciled with the crossed cannons of the artillery branch with the letter D underneath. Below the battery letter are the letters PA. and the number 34 under that. This Model 1904 haversack has the modification of snap hooks sewn onto the rear, a change that was made in 1908. This enabled the soldier to attach the haversack directly to the Model 1903 cartridge belt, eliminating the need for a shoulder strap. There is no US stenciled on the outside flap. The inside of the front flap does not have a makers stamp or date. All of the buckles, straps and leather laces are securely attached, all stitching is tight and unbroken. The closure strap at the bottom of the bag has been replaced a M1910 strap with a squared off tip. The buckle to secure the strap is also of the M1910 variety. There are no holes, rips or tears on the bag, but it does show staining from use. A shoulder sling has also been added to the haversack, like the one found on WWII US map cases. The sling is in very good condition. These don't come up everyday, and this one is a great example for your pre WWI collection.
