This is a European import single shot pistol most likely made in Germany or Austria. The overall length of this weapon is 17", with the barrel measuring 10 3/8". The .75 caliber smooth bore is dark, rust and pitted throughout the length of the barrel. There are no proof marks on the round barrel. The lock plate shows no makers mark or any other markings. The mechanics of the gun need some work. The hammer locks in the half cock position, but not in the full cock position. The barrel, lock plate and trigger all have a dark matching patina. It's obvious this gun has been together for a long time. The trigger guard, butt plate and double strap barrel band are brass, and all have a matching chocolate patina. The stock has a couple of problems, all forward of the lock. There is a stress crack forward of the lock that goes up to the barrel channel. On the belly of the stock just forward of the trigger guard a repair of questionable origin. I am pretty sure it is not from the period. Another crack extends from the repair to the front barrel band. There is a visible stamp on the left stock flat, the letters SC. A small, non captive iron ramrod came with the gun. It is not of the period either. Two old iron staples have been inserted into the right stock to house the ramrod. A small cloth sling has been attached to the gun via swivels. These rifle caliber "horse" pistols, converted to percussion, saw service in the early days of the Civil War.
