This is an excavated US Model 1858 "Jefferson Davis" hat badge used by the US Army from 1858 through 1872. This hat badge was worn on the side of the Model 1858 Hardee hat worn by officer's and enlisted men alike. The hat was named after William J Hardee, the same Hardee who wrote the Hardee's Tactics manual in 1855. The badge is 2 1/4" tall and 1 13/16" at the widest point. A spread winged eagle is depicted on a shield. In it's beak is a banner with the motto E PLUBURIS ENUM. The eagle clutches a laurel branch in it's left talon and three arrows in the right talon. The thin, sheet brass badge has a deep chocolate patina. This hat badge was excavated in Desoto Parish, Louisiana near the site of the Battle of Pleasant Hill. The battle occurred on 9 April, 1864 as part of the Red River Campaign. Approximately 12,000 Union soldiers under the command of Major General Nathaniel Banks met approximately 12.100 Confederate soldiers under the command of Major General Richard Taylor at the small village of Pleasant Hill. The battle was considered a tactical victory for the Union, but a costly one. Union casualties were 150 killed, 844 wounded and 375 missing. Confederate casualties were 1200 killed and wounded and 426 captured. This Hardee hat badge will make a nice addition to any dug collection.
