This is a riker case with four Civil War bullets, a depiction of Union gunboats battling with Confederate river batteries and images of Lieutenant General Simon Buckner and Brigadier General Ulysses Grant. The four bullets, one a .31 caliber pistol ball, one a .58 caliber Minie bullet, one a .69 caliber round ball and the other a .69 caliber Minie bullet, were recovered at Fort Donelson, Tennessee. The parchment style paper has been labeled "The Fight for Fort Donelson, Tennessee", along with the identification of each bullet, a brief summary of the battle and identification of the Union and Confederate commanders during the battle. The Battle of Fort Donelson began on 14 February, 1862, when Union gunboats engaged the Confederate river batteries at the fort. After a 1 1/2 hour duel the gunboats withdrew, suffering serious damage. The morning of the 15th saw Union Infantry attack the fort, but withdrew in the evening after suffering heavy casualties. A divided command on the Confederate side caused the fort to surrender the following day, 16 February. 1862. The battle was the Union's first major victory, and was the start of two of the most famous figures of the Civil War. Ulysses Simpson Grant became famous for his demand of an "Unconditional Surrender" and went on to command the entire Union Army. On the Confederate side, a little know Lieutenant Colonel of Cavalry refused to surrender his command, and led them out, along with all others who did not want to become prisoner across the icy Lick Creek and on into Nashville. He would go on to become the most feared Confederate Cavalry commander of the war, Nathan Bedford Forrest. The case measures 12 1/4" wide and 8 1/4" high. It has been provisioned on the back to hang from two nails or screws. This will make an inexpensive birthday or Christmas present for the Civil War collector in the family.
